Live: Essay...

Es ist mal wieder Zeit, sich mit den Essays zu beschäftigen... Und ausnahmsweise passiert das jetzt in der Bibliothek: Kein Internet, keine Ablenkung...

It's time to get started with this term's essays. That is happening in the library; no internet, no distraction...

Nachdem die TEDprize-Verleihung ja nun schon ein paar Tage vorbei ist, bin ich auf Umwegen noch auf eine kleine Neuerungenschaft gestoßen: Die Präsentationen auf der Website von TED werden langsam (aber sicher) in andere Sprachen übersetzt bzw. mit Untertiteln versehen. Das ganze läuft aber nicht in Form von professionellen Übersetzern ab, sondern ist ein Projekt, das Freiwillige "ausnutzt".
Und da ich ja schon mehrere Jahre die TED-Präsentationen verfolge, habe ich mich doch dort auch mal gemeldet. Ergebnis: Bisher zwei vollständige Übersetzungen und mehr folgt, je nach Zeit und Lust. Die Untertitel sind noch nicht auf der Homepage integriert, aber man kann sich hier schon mal die Ergebnisse ansehen (die deutschen Untertitel sind von mir):

As the TEDprize is over now, I found a new idea on the TED website, which involves the translation and creation of subtitles for the presentations available on their site. This is (or will be) done in a kind of an community approach, rather than by professional translators.
The two embedded videos above show the two talks, which I have proudly translated so far (my part ist obviously the German subtitle). But I will continue to do so depending on spare time available... If you would like to join the team, you can do this by joining the relevant group on Facebook, where you can get further information.

Waiting for TEDprize

Starting at 5pm PST, there will be a live-stream for the TEDprize ceremony, taking place in Long Beach, California. Due to the different time zone, this event starts at one o'clock in the morning (if you are located in Cork, as I obviously am right now).
The TEDprize is a small (and the only publicly available) live part of the TED conference, which features a lot of brilliant minds, artists and presenters from all over the world. Above is a picture of the TED stage in the Long Beach Center of Performing Arts during the start of one of the earlier sessions of the conference (source: rom).

Das Foto sagt ja im Prinzip schon alles: Heute gab es über einen längeren Zeitraum Schneefall in Cork (was ziemlich selten ist...)! Für ein Schneemann-Foto hat es leider nicht gereicht, da der Schnee nicht liegengeblieben ist :-(
